Située au pied du volcan encore actif, le Mont Asama, la distillerie Karuizawa a été établie en 1955. Après sa fermeture en 2000, elle a été démolie en 2016. De nombreux embouteillages mythiques ont grandement contribué à l'essor de la renommée de ce single malt culte, élaboré à partir de la célèbre et réputée variété d'orge nommée "Golden Promise".
