The origins of en primeur sales go back several centuries. As far back as the 18th century, certain Bordeaux merchants bought wines before they were bottled, when they were still being matured in the châteaux' cellars.
This method of marketing was structured over time and, in the 20th century, became a veritable business model for Bordeaux's Grands Crus Classés.
The concept was largely developed after the Second World War, notably under the impetus of brokers and merchants who played a key role in organising the market. Today, it has become a key event in the wine calendar, attracting buyers from all over the world.
Names of Châteaux and DomainsEvery spring, around a year after the harvest, the great Bordeaux châteaux unveil their new vintage, which is still maturing. To mark the occasion, tastings are organised for critics, wine professionals and merchants, who assess the vintage's potential and influence its reputation. Following these tastings, the châteaux set their prices and sell their wines to a network of négociants, who then sell them to private individuals, restaurateurs, wine merchants and collectors.
