The Bordeaux Primeurs

The Principle

The Bordeaux Primeurs are a unique tradition that allows you to buy preview of grands crus, well before they are bottled. Every spring, the châteaux of Bordeaux present the previous year's vintage to professionals and enlightened wine-lovers alike. This is the perfect opportunity to reserve these wines exclusive offers at often more attractive prices.

But how does it work? Why invest in these wines? On this page, we guide you through the world of primeur wines : what they are, how they are made, and how to buy them with confidence. Thanks to our expertise and reliability, we can help you make the best choices to enrich your cellar with wines.

A tradition rooted in the history of the Bordeaux wine region

The origins of en primeur sales go back several centuries. As far back as the 18th century, certain Bordeaux merchants bought wines before they were bottled, when they were still being matured in the châteaux' cellars.

This method of marketing was structured over time and, in the 20th century, became a veritable business model for Bordeaux's Grands Crus Classés.

The concept was largely developed after the Second World War, notably under the impetus of brokers and merchants who played a key role in organising the market. Today, it has become a key event in the wine calendar, attracting buyers from all over the world.

The Process

Every spring, around a year after the harvest, the great Bordeaux châteaux unveil their new vintage, which is still maturing. To mark the occasion, tastings are organised for critics, wine professionals and merchants, who assess the vintage's potential and influence its reputation. Following these tastings, the châteaux set their prices and sell their wines to a network of négociants, who then sell them to private individuals, restaurateurs, wine merchants and collectors.
There are several stages in the buying process:

Wine selection

Browse our selection of primeur bottles, choose from the available formats and add them to your reservation basket.

Payment of wine

Then place your order and pay the full amount or a deposit (including tax but excluding delivery charges). This transaction guarantees access to the bottles.

Your campaign dashboard

Find all the information about your past orders. Bottles, prices, formats, approximate delivery times, remaining balance...

Delivery after bottling

After a maturing period of 18 to 24 months in the châteaux cellars, the wines are bottled and ready for dispatch.

Payment of delivery charges

At this point, any carriage costs are calculated and invoiced before final delivery.

Why buy en primeur?

There are several advantages to buying en primeur:

  • Access to the best vintages : For connoisseurs and collectors, this means you can be sure of getting the bottles you want before stocks run out.
  • Attractive rates : En primeur prices are generally lower than those charged once the wine has been bottled and marketed. Some wines increase in value over time, offering the potential for added value.
  • Special formats and customised packaging : Buying en primeur allows you to order large formats (magnums, jeroboams, etc.), which may be difficult to find at a later date.
  • Precise vintage for a special event : It's not unusual for Primeurs buyers to place orders to celebrate events such as a birthday, the birth of a child, retirement or graduation.
